McDonald's is bringing Caesar flavor back — but not in the way you might remember. Starting July 21, the chain is adding four limited-time items built around a new Caesar Sauce blending Parmesan, lemon, and garlic.

The lineup includes a Bacon Caesar McCrispy, a Caesar Snack Wrap, and McCrispy Strips paired with the sauce, which can also be ordered solo for dipping. McDonald's dropped its classic Caesar salad back in 2020, and those aren't returning — this is a reinvention, not a revival.

The launch is part of a busy stretch for the Golden Arches, which has recently brought back its fried apple pie and rolled out meals tied to a Netflix animated series.

National Hot Dog Day was last Thursday, and if you've ever settled for a sad, rubbery frank, the pros say you can do better. Experts like Dan Pelosi, cookbook author of Let's Party, and Richard Pink of the legendary Pink's Hot Dogs in Los Angeles share their top tips for the perfect dog.

The debate comes down to cooking method: steam or boil indoors to preserve that satisfying snap, or go for a grill to get a proper char. Either way, toast your bun to prevent sogginess — potato buns are especially recommended.

The best part? Hot dogs are nearly impossible to mess up, endlessly customizable, and welcome at any cookout spread.

Jack’s Place in Leona Valley: Worth the Drive for the Patio, Portions, and Small-Town Charm

Jack’s Place in Leona Valley is one of those restaurants that feels like a local discovery, especially if you enjoy taking a drive through the quieter side of the Antelope Valley. Set against the scenic backdrop of Leona Valley’s farms and mountain views, Jack’s Place offers a welcoming small-town atmosphere, friendly service, and a menu broad enough to satisfy just about everyone.

This is a New American-style restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with options ranging from burgers, sandwiches, pizza, wings, pasta, tacos, salads, and full dinner entrées to comfort-food favorites and desserts. The menu is surprisingly extensive, which makes it a good choice for mixed groups where everyone wants something different.

The covered outdoor patio is one of the highlights. It is kid-friendly, relaxed, and dog-friendly for leashed pets, making it a great stop on a nice day if you want to sit outside and enjoy the Leona Valley scenery.

On our visit, Lori had the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, made with grilled chicken breast, bacon, avocado, lettuce, and garlic aioli on torta bread. She said it was one of the tastiest chicken sandwiches she has ever had, which says a lot. It had the right mix of freshness, richness, and flavor without feeling overdone.

I had the Pretzel Burger, made with house-ground beef, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese on a pretzel bun. The burger itself was good, but what made it stand out was definitely the pretzel bun. It gave an otherwise straightforward burger more texture, flavor, and personality.

Jack’s Place also has several items that regulars seem to love, including the cobbler, peanut butter pie, corned beef hash with eggs, pesto pasta with Greek salad, Buffalo-style Jack’s fries, and the B&B steak. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the service is consistently friendly and attentive.

It is a bit off the beaten path, but that is part of the appeal. If you are out for a drive, visiting Leona Valley, or just looking for somewhere different from the usual AV dining routine, Jack’s Place is worth a stop.

Local Bites Take:
Jack’s Place delivers good food, generous portions, friendly service, and a relaxing small-town atmosphere. The patio adds a lot to the experience, especially on a nice day.

Best for: Casual breakfast, lunch, dinner, scenic drives, families, dog-friendly patio dining, and comfort food with variety.

Food Truck of the week

Smash Bros

★★★★★

This week’s featured food truck is Smash Bros, a locally owned burger truck run by Andy and serving the Antelope Valley since 2020.

Smash Bros keeps things focused on what a good food truck should do well: fresh burgers, plenty of choices, customizable add-ons, and sides that make it easy to build the kind of meal you actually want.

Their menu offers a solid variety of smash burgers, with add-ons ranging from classic bacon to beef chorizo for those who want to kick things up a notch. On the side, they offer fries, onion rings, and even fried Oreos for anyone looking to finish with something sweet.

I ordered the double smash burger with American cheese, pickles, and fries. Since this was my first time having a smash burger, I honestly did not know exactly what to expect. I have seen smash burgers made on food shows, and I was half-expecting something overly greasy. That was not the case here. The burger had the crispy-edged, griddle-seared style you want from a smash burger, but it did not come across as greasy or heavy.

The burger itself was tasty, filling, and well put together. The American cheese worked exactly the way it should on this kind of burger, melting into the patties and giving it that classic burger flavor. The pickles had good flavor, though I would have personally preferred them sliced a little thinner. That is more of a personal preference than a dealbreaker.

The fries were good overall, though a few tasted slightly undercooked. Still, they worked well as a side and rounded out the meal. For just over $16, the portion felt fair, especially considering how filling the double burger was.

What stood out most is that Smash Bros feels like the kind of truck where the add-ons could really take the burger to another level. Next time, I would probably add bacon, beef chorizo, or another topping to see how much more flavor I could build into it.

They also offer strawberry lemonade, which sounds like a good pairing for a hot Antelope Valley day, and the fried Oreos are definitely on my list for next time.

Sweet Bite of the Week

Caramel Pastries Bakery

This week’s Sweet Spot of the Week takes us to Caramel Pastries Bakery on Lancaster Blvd., a cute local bakery offering cakes, pastries, muffins, croissant sandwiches, coffee, and a wide variety of dessert options.

As the name suggests, caramel is one of the bakery’s signature themes. Their caramel pastries, caramel-filled croissants, tarts, and caramel cheesecakes are aimed directly at anyone with a serious sweet tooth. The display also includes classic favorites like strawberry shortcake, chocolate mousse, cream puffs, crème brûlée, mango cake, and other beautifully decorated cakes.

The bakery has a comfortable interior, making it a nice spot to stop in for coffee, a pastry, or a light bite. They also offer savory options, including croissant sandwiches made with fresh-baked croissants, which makes it a possible brunch or quick lunch stop as well.

On our visit, we tried the crème brûlée and the strawberry shortcake, and both were delicious. The desserts were flavorful, fresh, and satisfying without being overly heavy. Based on the sweets alone, Caramel Pastries Bakery is definitely worth checking out.

That said, the service was a letdown. We found it to be sub-par, impatient, and close to rude. That matters, especially in a bakery where the experience should feel welcoming and enjoyable.

Local Bites Take:
Caramel Pastries Bakery has strong desserts, a cute setting, and plenty of tempting options. The crème brûlée and strawberry shortcake were both very good, but the service kept the overall experience from being better.

Best for: Cakes, pastries, coffee, croissant sandwiches, and sweet treats on Lancaster Blvd.

Rating: 3.5 stars — mainly because of the service.
